History (Elective)

History (Elective) is designed for students who appreciate and enjoy the human endeavors of the past, both for their own intrinsic interest and for their legacy to later generations. It provides opportunities for students to explore human actions in a range of historical contexts and encourages them to develop understanding of motivation, causation, consequence and empathy.

Students undertaking History (Elective) will develop skills in analysis, synthesis, critical judgement, problem-solving, rational argument and independent learning. They will also refine their skills in historical research, and verbal and written communication.

 

A key aspect of the course is the use of Computer Based Technologies for both historical research and the presentation of work.

In elective history there is a range of different topic areas that can be chosen:

  • Ancient and Medieval Studies (e.g Tutankhamen's tomb, the Ottoman Empire, Ancient China, the Incas)

  • Modern Studies (e.g the American Civil War, Terror and the French Revolution, Tiananmen Square, Cambodia, Jack the Ripper, Afghanistan, Apartheid)

  • Thematic Studies (e.g Slavery, Terrorism, Heroes and Villains, Assassinations)

  • Constructing History (e.g Film as History, Historical Fiction, History and the Media, History and the Internet)

 

 

The course develops skills that are useful for senior school and all University studies. It is ideal for students considering further study or a career in law, journalism, history and politics, international studies, media and communications, and economics.
